Ricky Martin Signs TV-Series Deal With Universal Television

In the midst of his ongoing success in the role of Che in the Broadway musical “Evita,” Ricky Martin has signed a talent holding deal with Universal Television that calls for him to develop and star in his first network television series and specials.

Details were not immediately available, but plans call for Martin to begin his television work once he finishes his stint on “Evita” on Jan. 6, 2013.

“Whether he’s performing before sold-out concert crowds, or starring on Broadway, where he is currently playing to SRO crowds in ‘Evita,’ Ricky connects with his audience in a very palpable way – and we are thrilled that he will be adding TV star to his incredible resume,” said Bela Bajaria, executive VP for Universal Television, in a statement.

Earlier this year, Martin made a much-talked about guest appearance as Spanish teacher David Martinez on “Glee,” performing a bilingual version of “Sexy and I Know It.”

But he’s been particularly successful in his role as Che, drawing sold-out crowds and requiring police escorts to and from nightly performances.
